"ART HAPPENS -- no hovel is safe from it, no prince can depend on it, the vastest intelligence cannot bring it about...."

James Abbot McNeill Whistler

WELCOME... to the artwork of sculptor Courtney Brown.  The following pages represent more than a decade of bronze sculpture, painting and mixed media art.

The Ascetic, cast & found iron, 12"x9"

The bronze sculptures of Courtney Brown employ both modern and primitive design.  Within the context of her work bronze becomes plastic, a fluid medium that mimics the texture and presence of wood, stone or ceramic.  Bronze as a medium for modern sculpture has unlimited potential and is at once technical and timeless.  These pieces express that duality, challenging the versatility of the metal without abandoning a commitment to craftsmanship.  The symbols employed in these sculptures are a representation of the duality of our world, where the façade of technological newness remains inextricably rooted to the foundations of our evolution.
